Spasms are the nightmare of every parent.
This is because the picture of our sweet baby that peacefully sleeps in its bed converts into baby cry and hysteria of the parents.
It has been estimated that even 40 percent of the babies have spasms, which usually start in the third week and end in the fourth month of life.
However, there are no strict rules – some babies have spasms right after they are born, and these spasms sometimes last until the baby becomes six months old.
Unfortunately, the conventional medicine does not provide an answer to the question what exactly spasms are and how can they be cured.
Spasms are not a disease, but a symptom. The cause of the spasms is not yet known, but there are several theories about the things that might be causing them.
The alternative and the conventional medicine point out the following things as possible spasms causes:
- allergy or sensitivity to certain ingredient from the diet of the mother
- immature digestive and nervous system of the baby
- GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)
- Swallowed air during feeding or crying
- Emotional stress of the baby after the birth
- Anxiety of the parents, which is being transmitted to the baby
Currently, the theories of GERD and the immaturity of the digestive and nervous system of the baby are the most widely accepted theories. The theory about the influence of the diet of the mother on the spasms is considered to be outdated.
How to cure the spasms
Your pediatrician is probably going to recommend the use of sab-simplex drops. The active ingredient of these drops is simeticon, which causes foam decomposition. It has been supposed that this ingredient prevents formation of gasses in the intestines.
Unfortunately, this product has been sold without any scientific confirmation about its effects. Three further clinical researches did not show any efficiency of simeticon when it comes to prevention of spasms.
Moreover, this product contains a plenty of additional ingredients such as additives and artificial aromas, which makes them unsuitable for babies.
The only product against spasms on the market has been proved inefficient? So what can the unfortunate parents do to calm their crying babies?
The latest researches bring hope to the parents. These researches have shown that there are three natural methods that can really help in the fight against spasms. This information has been scientifically proved.
The latest method for treating spasms which is the most promising is the use of probiotics. It has been discovered that the babies that suffer from spasms have insufficient probiotic bacteria in their gastrointestinal tract. This is why the use of probiotics for treating spasms makes so much sense.
A 28-day study has been conducted at the Turin University in Italy, which examined 90 babies that suffered from spasms. Half of the babies that participated in the study were given several drops of Lactobacillus reuteri probiotic (100 millions of bacteria), while the other half of the babies were given simeticon drops.
The results of the study differed drastically: in the first group, the condition of the babies improved by 95 percent. The babies only cried for about 50 minutes a ay, compared to the second group in which the babies cried for about 2.5 hours or more.
The product that has been used in this study is probiotic bacteria (Lactobacillus reuteri) from BioGaia. It is believed that other types of probiotic bacteria are also efficient in treating spasms. The researches on the topic go on.
2.Gripe water (water against spasms)
Gripe water, or water against spasms is a product made according to the ancient recipes of our ancestors. This water contains extracts from chamomile, fennel, lemon balm, and other herbs that have soothing effects and improve the digestion. Until recently, the efficiency of these herbs has been considered to be superstition.
Still, the latest studies have shown that these herbs are really effective.
In the first study, a mixture made of chamomile, fennel and lemon balm has been used, and it was confirmed that this mixture reduced the time of crying of the babies for 50 percent. The effect of the herbs went on two more days after the therapy was over.
In the second study, the babies were given 0.1 percent emulsion of fennel oil, four times a day. The emulsion reduced the spasms for 65 percent. There were no side effects whatsoever during both studies.
The most popular products against spasms in the world are Mommy’s Bliss and ColicCalm. If you cannot find these, you can use a regular fennel tea for babies (the best one being the one from organic herbs, without sweeteners).
Note: when you choose products against spasms, avoid the ones that contain alcohol and baking soda.
Homeopathy has been shown to be especially efficient in treating baby issues. The homeopathy offers a whole range of products and remedies against spasms, including Chamomilla, Colocynthis, Dioscorea, Magnesium muriatica and Magnesium phosphorica.
The remedy is being prescribed by an experienced homeopath on the basis of the symptoms the baby experiences. The most popular remedies against spasms are Colycinithis and Chamomilla.
What does the Ayurveda say?
According to the Ayurvedic medicine, spasms are the result of the imbalance of the Vata dosha. Thus, it is recommended that you massage the belly of the baby that has spasms using sesame oil, which is good and beneficial for the Vata dosha.
Other herbs that aid the reduction of vata-issues are: anise, fennel, ginger, cinnamon, cumin, etc.
The effects of some of the remedies are noticeable right away, while other remedies can take a couple of days until they start working. Be consistent and do not lose hope – spasms can be cured.
